If cycling is your passion, Scotland is the perfect playground. From gentle coastal paths to rugged mountain trails, the north‑east offers an incredible variety of routes for every level of rider. Whether you’re here for a leisurely spin or a full‑on endurance challenge, a VDub campervan gives you the freedom to explore it all at your own pace.

Scotland is home to some of the most spectacular cycling terrain. Mountain bikers will love the hilly climbs and technical trails around the Munro foothills near Braemar and Ballater, where the scenery is as rewarding as the ride itself.  If you prefer something gentler, the region also offers miles of flatter, more relaxing routes - perfect for spotting wildlife and soaking up the atmosphere of Scotland’s ancient Caledonian forests.

Old Railway Lines: Traffic‑Free Adventures

For those who enjoy long, scenic rides without the worry of traffic, the two old railway lines out of Aberdeen are ideal:

  • The Formartine & Buchan Way — stretching from Dyce to Fraserburgh, this route takes you deep into the countryside on a peaceful, well‑maintained path.
  • The Deeside Way — following the River Dee from Aberdeen to Ballater, this route offers a mix of woodland, riverside, and village scenery.

Both are perfect for families, touring cyclists and anyone who wants to explore at a relaxed pace.

Cross‑Country & Downhill Hotspots

Cross‑country and downhill mountain biking are hugely popular in the north‑east, and there’s no shortage of places to test your skills. On the outskirts of Aberdeen you’ll find:

  • Tarland
  • Pitfichie
  • Kirkhill

Each offers a mix of XC loops, technical sections and downhill tracks.

Further Afield: Scotland’s Top MTB Centres

If you’re planning a longer trip in your VDub, Scotland’s world‑class mountain biking centres are well worth the journey. Some of the best include:

  • Laggan Wolftrax
  • Golspie
  • Glentress (part of the famous 7Stanes network)

These centres offer graded trails, skills areas, and facilities that make them perfect for a full day of riding.
